Meet Funky Town Fridge: An Organization with a Cause as Cool as Its Name

Kids Eat in Color has donated to the Funky Town Fridge, an organization nominated by Kendra, its founder and a member of our Kids Eat in Color Community.

With a cause as cool as its name, Funky Town Fridge is a true grassroots community effort that is providing a splash of color and much needed produce in its community. A native to Fort Worth Texas, Kendra Richardson founded Funky Town Fridge because she knows first hand what it’s like to live in a community with limited access to fresh foods. Read on to learn more about the movement she is creating. 

Tell us a bit more about the impact of having these Fridges in your community. 

We’ve had a massive impact in providing fresh food to people in need across Forts Worth. Most recently, we’ve managed to feed over 600 families during the Texas winter storms earlier this year. 

We’re a community solidarity Fridge so we’re definitely putting food on tables daily. The fridges are open and accessible 24/7 so anybody at anytime can go get the food they need to improve their quality of life.

What is a Community Solidarity Fridge?

A community solidarity fridge is a form of mutual aid. That means that we all show up for our community to encourage cooperation instead of competition. We believe that all of us possess a wealth of skills, knowledge, and ideas. If we can share these things among ourselves in a way that meets our basic needs while contributing what we have to the common good, we make the world better for us all.

Who are the people this organization serves?  

We provide FREE access to healthy food in neighborhoods from all walks of life, including children raised in single-parent houses and may not have the means or resources to get them the food we provide.
